Tear Frescoes

A tear-away fresco is a pictorial technique that consists of making a painting on a layer of plaster that is still fresh. In this way, the properties of lime are exploited, which, combined with river sand and combined with the carbon dioxide of the atmosphere, thanks to a chemical process called carbonation, forms slowly drying a plaster with a hard and crystalline surface that is able to permanently fix the colors and to resist the action of weathering agents. This chemical reaction is quite fast (about 3 hours), which is why a safe and fast hand is needed in painting, as the pigment is immediately absorbed by the plaster. Once the carbonation has taken place, a cotton cloth (called Calicot, for which this technique is defined as tear or calico) is placed on top of it, spreading a layer of animal glue. When it dries, the actual tear is made and the canvas is removed gently, holding the surface layer of the fresco to the negative. in a subsequent phase, the fresco is put back in positive, spreading on the back of the painting a mixture of glue not soluble in water and then superimposing a sturdy canvas that will be the final support of the fresco. When the glue is perfectly dry, the first layer of glue and the first canvas (which rests on the painting) are detached, allowing the fresco to remain permanently fixed on the second canvas. In this way the fresco can be applied, according to your taste, on a wooden frame or directly on the wall, obtaining in every way a highly decorative result.
